QA Automation Team Lead (m/f/x)

Wien, Remote
Full-time
Permanent employee
80,000 € pro Jahr

Short Job Description

We are looking for a visionary and hands-on QA Automation Team Lead to rebuild our automated testing capability end-to-end. In this role, you won’t just maintain existing scripts - you will own the strategy, architecture and rollout of a modern automation approach that is reliable, maintainable and integrated into our delivery pipeline.

You will lead a hybrid international team located in Austria and Armenia and partner directly with our engineering and development team to embed quality into the SDLC. This role is ideal for a "builder" who has replaced flaky legacy automation before and knows how to create a pragmatic, scalable solution in a fast-paced environment.

Remote work within Austria possible; residence in Austria required.

What you can expect in this role

Strategic rebuild: You will assess our current state, define the target setup and lead the implementation of a new automation strategy (defining what to automate, when and how).

Hands-on architecture: You will create or modernize our automation framework (UI/API/Integration) with maintainability as a first-class goal, establishing a solid test pyramid and clear boundaries between test layers.

Quality Governance: Define and track key quality metrics (e.g., Mean Time to Detect, Change Fail Rate) to provide the leadership team with a transparent view of product health.

International leadership: You will lead, coach and grow a team of 3 manual & automation QA engineers in Armenia. You bridge the gap between locations, fostering a culture of ownership where product teams trust automation results.

Deep collaboration: You work closely with Engineering, Product and DevOps to integrate automation into our CI/CD pipelines (smoke tests, PR checks, release gates) and ensure fast feedback loops. You are not a final inspection point at the end of the line, you are an enabler who helps Product to have quality in mind starting from planning, Engineering to write better code/tests, and Infrastructure to prevent production catastrophe.

Impact: You will actively reduce flakiness and improve signal-to-noise ratios, turning test failures into actionable insights rather than ignored noise.

Your essential experience and education

Must-haves

Strong technical background: Proven experience in test automation engineering (Native/Web/API) with strong hands-on coding skills in modern languages.

Strategic Prioritization: Ability to map business risks to test coverage. You can prioritize the 'Critical Path' to ensure zero-downtime releases.

Framework architecture: Proven ability to design or rebuild automation frameworks from scratch and implement a sustainable "Test Pyramid" strategy. A forward-thinking approach to integrating AI-driven capabilities is fundamental to this role.

CI/CD integration: Solid knowledge of integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines and understanding of containerization.

Pragmatism: Experience in selecting the right tools based on team skill set and product architecture, not just personal preference.

Leadership experience: Experience in mentoring or leading engineers. You know how to manage a hybrid/remote setup and can effectively guide team members in different time zones (Austria/Armenia).

Communication: As an international company, we work closely with colleagues across different locations every day to align on priorities. In a team lead role, clear, confident and respectful verbal communication is essential to support collaboration and guide the team effectively.

Nice to have

Mobile automation: Experience with mobile test automation tools is a strong plus.

Performance & Observability: Exposure to performance testing tools (k6, JMeter) or observability tools to debug failures quickly.

German skills: German reading skills are useful for understanding specific product details and offer data, but are not required. All documentation, code and company communication are in English.
